Medical Assistance is a Federal Health Insurance Program that is run by the State. You may be eligible to receive Medical Assistance, also known as MA or Medicaid, through your county of residence as an SSDI recipient if you meet eligibility requirements. MA is automatically included with persons receiving SSI benefits. For persons with dual coverage Medicare is billed first and Medical Assistance is billed second.

As an SSI recipient, you are automatically eligible for Medical Assistance. Medical Assistance is a Federal Health Insurance Program that is run by the state. This insurance becomes available to you as soon as you receive your first SSI payment.

Medical Assistance Eligibility

People who are receiving Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) may also be eligible for Medical Assistance. An Economic Support Specialist from your county of residence determines your eligibility for the Medical Assistance program. Several factors including, family size, income, and assets determine your eligibility for the various categories of Medical Assistance coverage.

Medical Assistance Purchase Plan (MAPP)

The Medical Assistance Purchase Plan is a program designed to help more people with disabilities that are working receive health care coverage. The Medical Assistance Purchase Plan (MAPP) allows people with disabilities who are working, or have an approved Health and Employment Counseling (HEC) plan to buy their own health care coverage at a lower deductible. Through MAPP, people can earn and save more money than they would be able to without participating in the MAPP.
In order for you to purchase Medical Assistance coverage through this program, you need to be working at least a couple of hours per month and have assets of less than $15,000. (One home and one vehicle are not included in this asset limit) If you are interested in using the MAPP program once you start working, you can contact an Economic Support Specialist in your county of residence, to get signed up for the program. You may also contact your Health and Employment Counseling (HEC) Regional Screener in your area to start an employment plan. At this current time, the HEC screener for Western Wisconsin is Cami Engel, engelc@cilww.com , at the Center for Independent Living for Western Wisconsin, (715) 736-1800 or 1-800-228-3287 v/tty.
